MISTAKES THAT YOU SHOULD COMPLETELY AVOID IN A COVER LETTER

On my yesterday article, I talked about things that you should keenly look into when you are writing cover letter to your potential employer. I realized that there are quite a number of errors and mistakes that you might find yourself committing and it would be better if I highlight them today in details. This is because when you are able to understand them, you will actually avoid them. This will save your cover letter from being instantly thrown into dust bin.

It is apparent that the employer-to-be will actually read through it and once such errors become visible, your cover letter will be automatically eliminated. The matter has become so crucial especially in our young graduates and other job seekers who are simply clueless and tend to focus more on generic cover letters rather than content-based ones and  thus constantly commit such mistakes.

What are some of these mistakes that you can completely avoid in your cover letter?
1.      Starting with a lengthy non-specific paragraph
Actually, you need to understand that the employer would want to understand your cover letter in the fastest way possible. Putting a lot of details which are irrelevant consumes time and in some instance the employer may lose interest reading the entire paragraph. You should take note on that.

2.      Putting much focus on yourself
This is a mistake that is prevalent where applicants frequently use the phrase “I am…”, which ideally will gives the employer a distinct perspective of how self-centered you are. Meanwhile, you should reflect more on how your presence will have a positive impact on what you are bound to achieve for the organization.

3.      The use of anonymous referral
Some individuals use the term “To whom it may concern” when sending their cover letters. This tend to give a clear insight that you did not bother conduct your research to actually figure out who is to receive it. For instance, if it directed to the Operations manager, indicate that!

4.      Misspelling the company’s contact name
This is a critical issue that may cost you so dearly. Actually, it the most dangerous error you can do and I tell you that it will only take a flicker of a second for your cover letter to be dumped in a litter bin. Proofread and crosscheck before sending your cover letter to ensure what you have indicated is correct.

5.      Telling lies about what you have achieved
This is another mistake you should avoid because it will only be in a matter of time before everything unveils itself in the broad day light! Its consequences are regrettable especially if you make your way through and told to apply them practically. Just be true to yourself since being entirely honest with oneself is a good exercise!

6.      Talking ill of why you left your former job
You should not actually indicate negative aspect either about your previous boss or the recent job in your cover letter since this will dwindle your chances of getting that position. Most people tend to indicate that the previous job was tiresome, they were not handling the pressure, the salary used to be delayed among  nitty gritty issues may not create a good picture to the employer-to-be.

7.      Bringing the personal perspective too much!
By being overly about your personal life to the employer, for instance  in terms of religion, your spouse, on how you need the job to bring up your kids, your well fitting age may not create a good impression. It just shows how desperate you are and the way you can be swayed by feelings. Thus it’s good to avoid such off-limit topics.

I hope this additional information in relation to cover letter will boost you and enable you get that designated job!
